GOING GLOCAL is the way forward!!

Ar. Malli Saravanan, Founding Partner, WEBE Design Lab

“In the era where the world is transforming faster, Architecture requires critical thinking. The Glocal is the new normal, implementing contextual thoughts and the use of technology in the design approach paves way for qualitative outcomes.”

Architecture has been his passion from a very young age with mentorship from his father. The motivation and sequent interest earned him Undergraduate degree from School of Architecture and Planning, Anna University, Chennai in 2008 and a master’s degree from Technical University of Delft, Netherlands. He specialized in Architectural Engineering in fibre-reinforced composites and building applications. Upon his return to India, Ar. Malli convened with seven fellow architects from his undergraduate days and established WEBE DESIGN LAB.

Since its conception from 2010, WEBE has about 100 and more projects to their credit, covering a wide array of residences, corporate offices, retail, commercial spaces, hospitality and housing projects. One of their outstanding achievements is the ‘National War Memorial’, New Delhi, India.

Ar. Malli credits their success to having an inclusive design practice to maintain harmony between human life and environment. In the past decade, he has adapted to specific design approaches in architecture that attributes to globalization. The attributes being, technologies, tools and processes used to evolve and realise a project. With the advent of globalisation, understanding and implementing contextual characteristics in the design process are the key elements in his approach.

The aspects of contextual characteristics are inspired from two famous personalities. Ar. Laurie Baker, who initiated cost-effective, energy-efficient architecture. His designs maximized space, ventilation, light and maintained an uncluttered yet striking aesthetic sensibility. His other inspiration, Ar. Peter Zumthor, a ‘Pritzker Prize’ winning Swiss Architect from whom he takes inspiration of connecting emotions in spaces and making it very experiential. Secondly on a philosophical note ‘Patience – How a person has to be patient in order to achieve in life. “

His work philosophy adheres to two significant principles.

“Understanding client’s intent and Co-creating the project along with them” contributes a qualitative outcome for the architect and client.

‘National War Memorial‘,  New Delhi, India, their award winning and most prestigious project, has been instrumental in WEBE Design Lab’s growth. An international competition hosted by the Ministry of Defence, Government of India. With 750 entries from peers all over the world, they swept the first and third place. The first winning entry was commissioned to Webe Design lab. The project led to great learning and by realigning our working systems in order to collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams in an agreed short span of time.  While the ‘National War Memorial’ was a dream come true for all of the team members of WEBE Design Lab, Ar. Malli aspires to design a very simple, self-sustained community for the future.
